High power consumption causes power failure in local area

Local | By Correspondent June 2, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A power outage that occurred last night in several neighborhoods was attributed to a malfunction in one of the gas turbines, as reported by Darick Jonis, the director of Aqualectra, in an interview with Dutch news site Nu.cw. The increased demand for electricity during warmer weather played a significant role in the power loss.

The surge in electricity usage, particularly due to the extensive use of air conditioners and numerous televisions being switched on during the evening, surpassed the normal capacity, resulting in an electricity shortage in case of any technical faults. Jonis remarked, "We are currently experiencing the second-highest power demand in 2023."

To mitigate the impact on affected areas, Aqualectra swiftly implemented a switching program that alternated the power supply between districts. This approach helped distribute the inconvenience, ensuring that no single neighborhood experienced an extended period without electricity. Instead, several neighborhoods experienced shorter power outages.

After the gas turbine malfunction was repaired, Aqualectra cautiously initiated the reactivation of the turbines around 9 p.m., and by approximately 11 p.m., power was fully restored to all customers.

Jonis further explained that the ongoing natural phenomenon known as El Niño has resulted in reduced wind levels, thereby limiting the power generation capacity of wind turbines. This circumstance adds an additional layer of vulnerability to the power supply situation.

Efforts are underway to monitor and address the challenges posed by high power consumption and the external factors impacting electricity generation. Aqualectra and relevant authorities will continue to work towards ensuring a reliable and stable power supply for the affected areas.
