Historic Kas di Pal’i Maishi Suffers Heavy Rain Damage; Emergency Restoration Campaign Launched

Local | By Correspondent December 2, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The historic museum house Kas di Pal’i Maishi in Banda Bou has suffered significant damage following the recent heavy rainfall. Fundashon Museo Tula (FMT), which manages both Museo Tula and the rural museum in Barber, confirmed the situation and warns that urgent action is needed to protect this unique cultural landmark.

The traditional roof made of palm leaves—an essential feature of the building’s authentic rural architecture—has been severely affected, allowing water to penetrate the interior. Parts of the collection are now at risk, including several objects considered among the oldest physical testimonies of Afro-Curaçaoan history.

According to the foundation, the damage extends beyond the structure itself. It threatens an irreplaceable piece of Curaçao’s cultural heritage. Kas di Pal’i Maishi is one of the few remaining traditional country houses that authentically depicts the living conditions of former plantation workers and their descendants. The site operates as a living museum, hosting demonstrations, tours, and workshops that highlight the island’s early rural traditions.

To prevent further deterioration and rebuild the roof using its original construction style, FMT has launched an emergency fundraising effort. On January 3, the foundation will host “Dinner under the Full Moon,” a benefit event whose proceeds will go entirely toward restoration and preservation.

FMT is also calling for donations and welcomes partnerships with companies and organizations wishing to contribute to the protection of cultural heritage.

The foundation stresses that swift intervention is crucial. Traditional palm-leaf roofs are especially vulnerable to moisture accumulation and mold after extreme weather events. Without repairs, the museum’s future accessibility—and its educational mission to pass on Afro-Curaçaoan history—cannot be guaranteed.
