AMSTERDAM - Hubert Fermina died at the age of 74. In 1994, the former politician was the first Dutchman with an Antillean background in the House of Representatives on behalf of D66.

Fermina's political career for D66 started in the city council of Lelystad and as a member of parliament for Zuid Holland. “Hubert has always been committed to minorities,” the political party writes in a memoriam. “He chose politics because he noticed that this would allow him to achieve more for healthcare.” Fermina also committed to opening up same-sex marriage in Curaçao.
After his political career, Fermina became director of the National Bureau against Racism. This year he was still active at D66 as a confidential adviser. “Hubert committed himself to a party where everyone is welcome and everyone can participate. We will miss him immensely," said D66.
