"Human rights are not protected"

Local | By Correspondent November 25, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Almost 65 percent of the respondents think that human rights in Curaçao are not respected. This is according to a survey by the Ombudsman.

484 people took part in the survey and they gave their opinion about human rights on the basis of 17 questions. 26 percent of the respondents say that the island is complying with human rights.

On November 22, Human Rights Defense expressed its concern about the fate of 40 Venezuelans who were intercepted at sea on November 21. Their boat was spotted by the Coast Guard at Klein Curaçao.

The human rights organization said that it is afraid that the 40 will be put on the plane home the following day. On November 23, at a quarter to 10 a flight from Avior was ready to fly them to Caracas, while the borders are officially closed.

The organization says that Curaçao has previously promised to give Venezuelans the chance to tell their story and the reason why they left Venezuela.
