Human Rights Defense Curaçao calls for action on outdated human rights legislation

Local | By Correspondent December 11, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - On UN Human Rights Day 2023, Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) draws special attention to the persistent challenges in immigration policies and outdated legislation in Curaçao. These issues are not only harmful to specific demographics but also impede the overall economic growth of the island.

On this significant day, December 10, when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is celebrated worldwide, HRDC marks its fourth anniversary. The organization, a stronghold of human rights advocacy in Curaçao, emphasizes the need for balance and modernization in immigration policies and legislation.

"Our goal is freedom, equality, and justice for everyone," says a spokesperson for HRDC. "We see that outdated laws and an imbalanced immigration policy not only harm specific demographics but also hinder the economic development of Curaçao."

HRDC points to dire situations where migrant children on Curaçao, even with permanent residency permits, cannot be adequately insured. Additionally, the organization highlights the presence of thousands of workers on Curaçao without legal residency and work permits. These issues underscore the urgent need for a more inclusive and just policy.

Education

To promote knowledge and participation, HRDC has been dedicated to human rights education. This initiative, including training for teachers and government officials, is crucial for raising awareness and strengthening human rights on the island.

"We aim for a society where everyone, regardless of nationality, origin, or religion, knows and can exercise their rights," adds the spokesperson. "It is about embedding these rights in every aspect of our Curaçao community."
