Human Rights Defense Curaçao reflects on refugee situation

Local | By Correspondent June 20, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) will observe Refugee Day on Tuesday by reflecting on the plight of individuals who are no longer able to reside in their home countries due to various circumstances. HRDC highlights that the island primarily accommodates Venezuelan refugees who have been compelled to flee their country amidst ongoing conflict.

This year's theme focuses on finding solutions for refugees by ensuring they feel welcome on the island when seeking refuge from emergencies in their home countries. The human rights organization emphasizes the importance of preparing these individuals, including whole families, for a potential return to their home country as soon as the situation allows.

Curaçao extends assistance to these individuals through various organizations dedicated to their well-being on the island. These organizations provide legal aid and, for instance, cover medical expenses, irrespective of the refugees' legal status.

The Refugee Convention, signed in 1951, has garnered the membership of approximately 150 countries. HRDC urges the government of Curaçao to align itself with these countries and join the Convention. "By doing so, Curaçao would send a positive signal to the world," stated HRDC.
