Human rights violation continues

Local | By Correspondent October 25, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The inhumane treatment of Venezuelan refugees and crisis migrants hardly changes. Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) reports this. “The new government of Curaçao continues the approach of recent years.” The next repatriation flight is this Saturday, October 30.

According to HRDC, the recent report from Amnesty International (A.I.) correctly and truthfully states that since their first report in 2018, there are still reprehensible violations of fundamental human rights of Venezuelan citizens in Curaçao in 2021.

HRDC has been working for two years to improve the situation for Venezuelans who are forced to leave their country and start over elsewhere. According to the organization, it is unknown how the people from Venezuela are treated.

“It is said that Curaçao is too small for refugees. The government is still obliged to provide them with a minimum standard of humanitarian and respectful treatment,” said HRDC. According to the human rights organization, Curaçao must answer to the United Nations, because it is part of the international community. “Dutch Undersecretary of Kingdom Relations Ramond Knops puts the people issues on the plate of the government of Curaçao,” according to HRDC.

"We hope that our parliament will make itself heard soon, because despite the serious attention of the local media for the A.I report, no official response has yet been heard, nor from the government," the organization said.

HRDC reports that there is a need to work together quickly and decisively within the Kingdom to arrive at a transparent and responsible policy for the protection of refugees and crisis migrants.
