Illegal diabase mining with water tanks resumes

Local | By Correspondent September 30, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Residents of the Hanenberg district are seriously concerned about illegal diabase excavation next to their area. The excavation was halted for several months after a visit by the VVRP inspection (Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning) and the police, but work has resumed since this week.

It is a hill in an urban residential area on which there are also two water tanks. The removal of vegetation has made the mountain more susceptible to erosion. It is therefore feared that the water tanks will collapse.

It is estimated that some 200 cubic meters of diabase have now been excavated. The residents informed the police of the illegal work. The police failed to show because they did not have enough manpower.

Residents say that strict action must be taken as the situation becomes more dangerous if more diabase is excavated.
