WILLEMSTAD – Authorities moved quickly after a fire broke out shortly after midnight at Plasa Wilson Papa Godett, where vendors connected to the Marshe Nobo project are temporarily operating their stalls. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Ministry of Economic Development to secure the area and ensure the safety of all involved.

Minister Roderick Middelhof said swift measures were taken as soon as the incident was reported. He stressed that the safety of vendors, visitors and nearby residents is the highest priority. According to the minister, emergency steps were implemented to bring the situation under control while initial assessments were initiated.
Preliminary inspections are being arranged to determine the extent of the damage and to assess how affected vendors can be supported, particularly those whose stalls were damaged or who suffered losses of merchandise. The Ministry of Economic Development said it will remain in close contact with Fundashon Marshe and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate next steps in the coming days.
Beyond addressing the immediate consequences of the fire, the minister noted that the incident once again highlights the urgent need to accelerate construction and renovation work on the new market. The Marshe Nobo project aims to create a modern market space with improved infrastructure, updated safety measures and facilities that reflect the economic and cultural importance of the market for Curaçao.
According to Middelhof, the new market is not merely a construction project, but an investment in local entrepreneurs, food security and Curaçao’s cultural heritage. He reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to delivering the project and said coordination efforts will be intensified wherever possible.
Additional information will be shared as more details become available. Residents and vendors seeking further clarification are advised to contact the Ministry of Economic Development.
