Immigration detention: The Netherlands will only act when Curaçao requests this

Local | By Correspondent October 5, 2020

THE HAGUE - Undersecretary Raymond Knops of Kingdom Relations is once again holding back when it comes to immigration detention in Curaçao. According to the undersecretary, this remains a matter for Curaçao, where the Netherlands can assist on request.

Dutch Member of Parliament for the D66 party, Antje Diertens had asked the undersecretary to investigate the possibilities of strengthening legal aid in Curaçao, both in terms of capacity and level of knowledge.

It has been agreed in the Four-Party Judicial Consultation that sub-working groups can also be set up to promote regional migration issues, including legal aid for foreign nationals.

Among other things, by means of knowledge transfer in the field of asylum and return policy and legal procedures. If necessary, the Netherlands can provide additional technical assistance on request, such as education and training, including in the context of the Venezuela issue.

But only if Curaçao asks for it.
