Local | By Correspondent February 16, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The percentage of former prisoners who commit crimes again after release has increased. This was declared by prison warden Urny Floran yesterday in the parliamentary meeting about the latest developments in the SDKK prison.

The prison has calculated the rate of recidivism among people convicted of a criminal offence. The number of recidivisms among adults has increased in the past three years.

In 2019, 11 percent of inmates committed another crime. In 2020 this percentage rose to 12 and in 2021 the prison registered 21 percent of repeat offenders.

The number of recidivists is also high among minors. In 2019, 21 of the 144 young offenders were detained again after being released. The following year, 22 of the 81 young people committed another offense and in 2021 the prison registered 21 repeat offenders. 85 young people were locked up at the time.
