International archaeological project starts in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent July 26, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Cultural Landscapes Project (CCLP) has started and is currently in its first phase. This is an archaeological project on an international level.

Together with local archaeologists, students will spend five weeks exploring the remains of past inhabitants who have had an impact on the island's biodiversity. The project is a collaboration between the National Archaeological and Anthropological Museum (NAAM) foundation, an American software company and three universities from Canada, Australia and Germany.

Answers are given to statements such as what influence slavery, urbanization and industrialization have had on Curaçao. “This project is not only important for our heritage, but also to emphasize the influence we as current residents have on nature and nature on us,” says NAAM.

The foundation is organizing an open day in Pietermaai on Saturday 30 July. Attendees can see what has been found so far and get to know the local and international team. There will also be mini workshops.
