Isla Refinery pensioners to meet with premier over outstanding benefits

Local | By Correspondent October 18, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A group of retirees from the Isla refinery will meet with Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas on Friday to seek clarification regarding their pensions. The former employees demonstrated outside Fort Amsterdam on Wednesday to emphasize their demands.

The pensioners are requesting the government to provide an advance on part of the outstanding debt owed by the refinery, totaling 21 million guilders. They hope for a resolution before the end of the year.

Pisas previously expressed disappointment over the demonstration, stating that the retirees could have directly scheduled a meeting to discuss their concerns.

During a recent question period in the Staten, Pisas revealed that there is an agreement with PdVSA, but that the Curaçaoan government relies on a U.S. license to conduct business with Venezuela. Due to the sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela, the country is currently facing challenges in conducting international financial transactions.

Pisas will engage with the pensioners again on Friday to provide further explanation about the situation and potential solutions.
