Journalism Fund Returns to Caribbean for Second Grant Round in 2026

Local | By Correspondent January 13, 2026

AMSTERDAM – The Fonds Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten will return to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom in April 2026 for a second round of grants aimed specifically at journalists on the six islands. The fund announced the new working visit as part of its efforts to further strengthen journalism in the region.

During the first Caribbean grant round, nearly twenty journalistic projects received funding. Several of those projects have since resulted in published work. According to the fund, the experiences from that first round form the foundation for the upcoming subsidy program, which will be presented during public meetings on each of the islands.

At these meetings, journalists who previously received grants will also be given the opportunity to share their work and discuss their experiences with colleagues. The aim is to encourage knowledge exchange and inspire new applications.

The working visit will be carried out by managing director Joëlle Terburg and Caribbean programs expert Wensly Francisco. Terburg said she is looking forward to continuing conversations with journalists she met during the first visit and emphasized that the fund wants to build on the strong journalistic traditions of the islands.

Francisco indicated that he is particularly interested in the outcomes of the funded projects and hopes to reach journalists and media makers who did not apply previously or were not awarded a grant in the first round.

In addition to the public sessions, the fund will conduct working visits to newsrooms and organizations active in media and journalism. The exact dates of the meetings will be announced in early 2026. Journalists, photographers, documentary makers, radio and podcast producers, non-fiction writers, and media executives are invited to participate.

As with the first Caribbean visit, the fund will work closely with local contact persons on each island to ensure broad outreach and engagement within the media sector.
