Justice Ministry Involves Detainees in Orange the World Campaign Against Violence

Local | By Correspondent December 27, 2025

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Justice Curaçao and the Uitvoering Organisatie Justitiële Zorg Curaçao (UOJZ) expanded their efforts against violence this year by actively involving detainees in the global Orange the World campaign. With this step, the Justice Ministry is opting for a broader approach to raise awareness about violence, particularly violence against women and children.

As part of the campaign, all buildings under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice Curaçao were decorated with Orange the World flags and illuminated in orange. Buildings managed by UOJZ were also lit up in orange, serving as a visible and symbolic statement against violence.

A notable component of the campaign was the educational outreach conducted by UOJZ among detainees at the SDKK. Detainees participated in discussions about domestic and relational violence and the meaning behind the Orange the World initiative. Following these sessions, detainees took part in a writing exercise, completing a sentence explaining why they oppose violence against women.

The cards featuring these personal statements will be given a permanent place within UOJZ facilities and are intended to serve as a daily reminder of the shared responsibility to prevent violence.

During the campaign, Shalton Hato delivered a strong message condemning all forms of violence, with particular emphasis on violence against women and children. He called for a collective change in mindset to help make Curaçao a safer society. Speaking on behalf of UOJZ, Mildred Francisca stressed that the work is far from complete and that sustained awareness, cooperation, and engagement are essential to preventing violence.

The campaign concluded with a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of domestic and relational violence. According to the Ministry of Justice and UOJZ, the ambition is to further expand Orange the World activities in the future, with the goal of building an increasingly strong and inclusive movement against violence in Curaçao.
