KEM party revives proposal to reconnect households to water and electricity

Local | By Correspondent October 25, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The political party KEM has brought a proposal from water and electricity utility company Aqualectra back onto the agenda, aiming to reconnect residents currently cut off from essential utilities. This initiative will be funded by the Ministry of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare (SOAW).

KEM leader Michelangelo ‘Low’ Martines confirmed that negotiations have taken place with Aqualectra regarding the proposal. A key point of discussion involved Aqualectra’s suggestion that the government cover fines for residents who had previously accessed water or electricity illegally. Martines argued that these fines are not directly tied to the actual usage of utilities and could potentially be waived by Aqualectra, which the company ultimately agreed to.

A joint press conference between SOAW and Aqualectra is scheduled for next Wednesday, where more details about the project will be provided.

“The project’s priority is to assist households without basic utilities,” Martines stated.
