WILLEMSTAD - According to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops, Curaçao faces major financial, economic and social challenges. With the growth agreement that was concluded in July 2019, the Netherlands is trying to contribute to an action perspective.
The implementation of this is still difficult to get off the ground. The crisis surrounding the Giro Bank and the inadequate supervision by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten have further made the problems visible. Minister Knops says that although this is a country issue of Curaçao, together with the Dutch Minister of Finance he has kept an eye on the situation. He has also offered technical support.
To underline this, a senior official from the Ministry of Finance has had discussions with all relevant parties during Knop’s visit. Concrete suggestions were made for tackling the problems and for cooperation in the search for solutions - without prejudice to the various responsibilities.
