Knops: no asylum seekers behind bars in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent September 30, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - The Undersecretary of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops says that there are no asylum seekers or refugees imprisoned in Curaçao. He says that in a letter to the Dutch First Chamber in Parliament (Senate).

52 Venezuelans have filed an official objection against their deportation.

The statement made by the Undersecretary is remarkable because, according to immigration lawyers, clients are indeed detained.

For example, since April a former soldier has been behind bars in block 1 of the SDKK prison. Also, in the men's section a 23-year-old asylum seeker has been imprisoned since February this year. A minor Venezuelan girl is also locked up in the Youth Delinquency Center (GOG).
