Large-scale sterilization campaign started

WILLEMSTAD - The Dierenbescherming (Animal Protection) and the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) have launched a large-scale campaign to limit the population of stray dogs and cats. Low-income households can register for the sterilization of their pets for free.

Stray animals pose a risk to public health and road safety. Moreover, they are a nuisance for tourists from abroad.

That is why the Dierenbescherming, supported by the CTB, is starting a large-scale sterilization campaign. Retirees, people on benefits and people who receive a minimum wage can have their four-legged friends and cats sterilized for free. Persons who earn between 1,667.47 and 3,000 guilders per month pay 60 guilders per animal for the procedure. Individuals earning more than 3,000 guilders should contact a veterinarian.

October is normally the sterilization month of the Animal Protection. Due to Covid-19, the organization was unable to conduct a large-scale sterilization campaign. Some local vets have nevertheless assisted with sterilizations during this period. As a result, the Animal Protection has still been able to help underprivileged people with free sterilizations.
