Larmonie-Cecilia: “Raising the retirement age unrealistic”

Local | By Correspondent November 17, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The retirement age will not be raised to 66 years, reports Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW).

According to the minister, it would not be realistic to raise the retirement age from 2025. “We have a very different kind of climate on Curaçao than in the Netherlands. It is not feasible for certain professions to carry out these activities at an advanced age,” says Larmonie-Cecilia.

Research has yet to show that the increase in retirement age is unrealistic. Alternative proposals with the same budgetary effect are also being looked at. An independent economic institute will then map the budgetary effects on the affordability of pensions and social security if the retirement age is raised to 66 in 2025. The results are presented to the Netherlands and Curaçao. A meeting will then be held to review the results.
