WILLEMSTAD - Light is burning again in the lighthouse of Oostpunt (east point of the island). Jan Sierhuis, head of the Shipping Inspectorate, confirms this to the media today. Several Members of Parliament had asked questions last week about the dangerous situation that arose due to the darkness at Oostpunt.
The problem has since been resolved after the maritime authorities gained access to Willy Maal's private property. There is still discussion about the poor condition of the lighthouse. Maal would have sent several letters to the Minister of Public Works Zita Jesus-Leito about this, but received no response.
The site of the lighthouse is 'a treacherous point', according to Maal, because there have been several shipwrecks in the past and people have drowned due to the heavy surf and strong current.
