Lionfish still threat

Local | By Correspondent October 2, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - You might see it less, but the Lionfish is still present in the waters around Curacao. The fish is a threat to coral reef fish.

The Lionfish eats the coral reef fish before they are large enough to reproduce, with the result that there is less and less of this type of fish.

This has indirect consequences for the coral reef because these types of fish release the coral from algae and prevent the coral from suffocating and subsequently dying off. The Lionfish is said to be deeper in the water.

To make people aware of the dangers of the Lionfish, an education and Awareness evening was held on Tuesday as part of the Curaçao Dive Festival.
