WILLEMSTAD – The year of the pig. According to Chinese culture and tradition, this is the year of the pig. And it was celebrated wholeheartedly by the Chinese community at the International School last Saturday.
The celebration was also attended by the Minister of Social Development Hensley Koeiman, the Minister of Culture Marilyn Alcala-Walle and the President of Parliament William Millerson. The Chinese Consul General was also present and spoke extensively on the developments that are currently taking place in China.
The event was crowned by several presentations including the dragon dance. The Chinese School also participated in several performances, including a demonstration of traditional Chinese clothing.
The Pig is the twelfth of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. In the continuous sexagenary cycle of sixty years, every twelfth year corresponds to hai, 亥; this re-recurring twelfth year is commonly called the Year of the Pig 豬.
