Lysaira Ortela: It is time to modernize EOP

Local | By Press release February 25, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - Lysaira Ortela, number 9 on the list of the political party MAN, is a firm believer in it: If we want more development for our island, we really need to join forces now and legislate around the EOP (Curaçao Island Development Plan, AB 1995 no. 36).

Ortela has an academic background and, according to her, extensive knowledge in the field of banking affairs. She will make her debut on the MAN list for the upcoming elections. With her slogan Pens'é, hasié, logr'é… Ban Bib'é [Literally translated: Think it, Do it, Realize it ... Experience it] she makes clear her belief “that well-being, leading a worthy life and development of our people is the number 1 priority and for these reasons we must make this happen.”

It is this belief that leads Ortela to see the adaptation of the EOP as an important action point to realize development “but a development that is adapted to the demands and the reality of the 'Yu di Kòrsou' (Curaçaoan) of today and whereby a balance must be found between protecting and safeguarding our ecosystem on the one hand and facilitating a productive economy on the other, so that Curaçao can grow.”

Ortela further states: "Economic development is of great importance to the well-being of our island. For this we need both local and international investors. Land is one of the sources of great importance and often investors need it to establish themselves,” says Ortela.

The zoning of Curaçao in which the destinations of the sites are regulated - such as areas with residential, commercial, tourist and agricultural purposes - is included in the EOP. The EOP is the first development plan that was approved by the Island Territory of Curaçao in August 1995.

"This plan should be revised every 5 years. However, apart from the 2017 change, nothing has ever been done about it. Given that the investment climate must be made more attractive but must always be in balance with the philosophy of the company. population, it is important that the process of adapting the EOP is started as soon as possible,'' says Ortela.
