Mangrove restoration project kicks off in Boca Sami

Local | By Correspondent October 28, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Deloitte's mangrove restoration project in the Dutch Caribbean and Ryan de Jongh started on Thursday. The first trees were planted in Boca Sami, together with Carmabi, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) and the Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP) Charles Cooper.

The aim of the project is to use real actions to restore biodiversity, help with coastal protection and give a boost to other ecosystems. De Jongh has been committed to planting and restoring mangrove forests on Curaçao for years.

As part of the recovery project, young people from different neighborhoods will be sought to support De Jongh and the Deloitte team. “In this way we also hope to contribute to a bit of extra employment for young people on Curaçao,” says Deloitte.

Possibilities for sharing knowledge about mangrove trees by means of an educational program are also being looked into. In addition, research is being conducted into ways to monitor carbon storage in mangrove trees.

After the pilot of the recovery project in Boca Sami, trees will also be planted at Rif St. Marie and Klein Curaçao.
