Member of U.S. medical staff accused of theft

WILLEMSTAD - Authorities arrested a man who recently arrived in Curaçao as a member of the US medical team to assist during the corona pandemic. The arrest took place yesterday afternoon.

According to sources close to the case, the man - of American nationality - is said to have stolen medicines from the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). In a press release, the CMC indicated that they have a zero-tolerance policy against theft and that they had filed a complaint against the man. A criminal investigation was immediately started.

In the press release, the CMC indicated that they saw on video images that the suspect entered the operating room several times, stayed there for some time and then left again. That while he had no business there at the time.

The man would have been confronted by the management, after which he would have confessed to having stolen medicines. The hospital then filed a complaint. The man has been arrested in his hotel room. During a search of the hotel room, authorities found several stolen medicines.

The investigation is continuing. It is also being investigated whether other persons - also from the medical team from the US - may be involved.
