WILLEMSTAD - Former CHATA director Miles Mercera is now officially a politician. Rumors had been buzzing for months, and it was actually already clear after his resignation from the Curaçao Hotel and Tourism Association (CHATA). Mercera announced on Sunday evening to be the leader of the new political party Vishon. Mercera will top the party's list and is therefore the political leader.
Mercera announced in an open letter last Friday to members, partners and 16,000 employees in the hospitality industry that he had made a bold decision to resign. Mercera says he has put heart and soul into the tourism industry over the past ten years, but now wants to focus on the bigger picture, namely Curaçao.
On Sunday evening, Mercera said in his announcement that he was entering politics and aspiring to a new kind of political leadership. Traditional politics must give way to new ways of thinking, says Mercera.
"Vishon wants to bring about change through equal opportunities, space for innovation and leadership with vision and show that we have the capacity to develop the island and work together for a better future," Mercera said in a video message.
