Military officer to pay fine for discriminatory statements

Local | By Correspondent December 5, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - A Dutch soldier was arrested on November 16 at Zanzibar in Jan Thiel. The soldier allegedly misbehaved in a drunken state and became involved in a brawl.

When the security guard grabbed the soldier from behind to address him about his behavior, the soldier made a slamming movement towards the security guard and made discriminatory statements. The security officer subsequently arrested the soldier and handed him over to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, which - as usual in the case of a soldier being suspected of a criminal offense - carried out further investigation.

The prosecutor of the Public Prosecution Service Curaçao has offered the soldier for discrimination and mistreatment a transaction of 800 guilders. If the soldier does not pay the fine, he will be summoned before the military criminal court. The Ministry of Defense has been informed of the incident and regrets the fact that an employee has expressed himself in this way.
