Minister Girigorie: "No political interference with case convicted former prime minister"

Local | By Correspondent November 5, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie has no political involvement in the case against former Prime Minister Gerri Schotte. He made this statement during a meeting in parliament yesterday.

Member of Parliament of the opposition party MFK (which was founded by Gerrit Schotte) Charles Cooper asked minister Girigorie to look at the corruption that he believes is taking place at the Probation Service. According to Cooper, everything would be done to prevent Schotte from being released with a monitoring ankle bracelet. But Girigorie said that as a minister he does not interfere in the case of the incarcerated former prime minister.

Earlier, Schotte's lawyer, Lizaima da Costa Gomez, also referred to "cheating" around the Schotte case. On Friday, the judge will decide whether Schotte can go home earlier. His lawyer has made a request for this. In June, Schotte would already be allowed to leave prison with an ankle bracelet to spend the rest of his sentence under house arrest. But there was a negative advice about this. The lawyer of the former prime minister has protested against this and has now appealed.
