WILLEMSTAD - The nuisance permit for chicken farm J&M Egg's Farm Moderna was recently revoked with immediate effect by Minister Dorothy Pieterz-Janga of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN).
The withdrawal is at the request of the company itself, much to the surprise of the residents of Sunset Heights. The neighborhood has been suffering due to the stench from the chicken farm for years. In June, the judge ruled that J&M Egg's was obliged to limit the nuisance.
The poultry farm had to meet certain conditions before October 7 or else pay a penalty. The nuisance permit was revoked a few days before the deadline.
According to Pietersz-Janga, the ministry, in collaboration with the chicken farm, is striving for 'a sustainable solution in the interest of the entire community of Curaçao'. “Within six to nine months, the ministry will formulate a new nuisance permit, intended for the entire poultry sector of Curaçao,” said the minister.
