WILLEMSTAD - The police will be more visible on the street starting this week. Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie announced this on Sunday during a specially added press briefing.

"Society has regularly approached the ministry with the question why the police is much less visible on the street in recent times compared to a few months ago, when the Covid-19 pandemic on Curaçao was still in the initial phase" Girigorie argued.

“During the first wave of the Covid-19 infections, there was indeed more police on the street and more checks were carried out. But once that first wave was over and the number of infections stabilized, the police returned to crime fighting. and the other general activities. But given the drastic increase in infections in recent times, the police will has started carrying out checks again since Monday," said Girigorie.

The inspections will mainly focus on compliance with hygiene measures and the compulsory social distance at shops and in the catering industry, for example. According to Girigorie, a company will be closed immediately if it does not comply with the rules. Furthermore, care will be taken to prevent large groups of people from coming together.

The police will receive help from Defense, Volunteer Corps (VKC) and the Curaçao Militia.
