WILLEMSTAD - The murder case of the former police officer Niven Clemens Patrick van Thijs will only be tried on February 16, 2024. This was announced during a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Several details and reports are still missing, preventing the case from being fully addressed. Additional information is required to reach a judgment. Surveillance footage and original images of the shooting incident are still needed for the investigation. Moreover, the phone records of the suspects have yet to be released.
Additionally, the victim's girlfriend still needs to provide a statement. Furthermore, a report regarding the DNA found on the murder weapon is missing and still needs examination. The weapon was found next to the victim with Van Thijs' DNA and that of another person on it.
Van Thijs was blocked and shot to death on the Hariri roundabout in Palu Blanku during the night of March 19. His vehicle was seized on the same night, along with a firearm and several casings. At the end of March, the police arrested four suspects on suspicion of murder.
