New research into Curaçao society

Local | By Correspondent August 26, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Researchers from the Curaçao Biomedical & Health Research Institute (CBHRI) and the University of Groningen (RUG) will be conducting research into Curaçao society and, together with the population, want to generate good ideas for the development of the island.

Next month, the members of the SONORO Community will be approached by telephone for a research into life in Curaçao. This time they can make their voices heard about health, money, and the consequences of corona on their lives.

The SONORO Community is a household panel representative of the residents of Curaçao. When setting up the SONORO Community, almost 3000 households were approached door to door and asked if they would like to participate. The research was funded with funds from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Next month's thematic questionnaire provides insight into the financial and health skills within Curaçao society. “It is being investigated to what extent the residents of Curaçao possess the skills and knowledge to make good and effective choices for their health and financial situation. In times of Corona, these themes are more topical than ever,” explains researcher Jasmira Wiersma.

“We hope this time too for the necessary cooperation. Every participant is important to us.” says Elly Hellings, panel manager at SONORO. "The participants can count on their information being handled confidentially." All information is processed anonymously and stored in a secure environment. To this end, there is collaboration with the internationally recognized research and data collection institute CentERdata, affiliated with Tilburg University.

Besides Jasmira Wiersma and Elly Hellings, Renske Pin (researcher health literacy) and Merel Griffith (survey manager) are part of the SONORO team. Jasmira will use this research to obtain her PhD on the subject of financial literacy at the University of Groningen (RUG).
