WILLEMSTAD - The new Selikor garbage trucks have arrived in Curaçao. At the beginning of July, the garbage collectors stopped working due to the shortage of trucks and the increasing workload.
A large part of the trucks is inoperative, so that the work piled up further and further. Selikor was well behind schedule for garbage collection in several neighborhoods. In addition to the workload, the employees feared for their health because of the very unhygienic situation of dirt that remains outside for a long time.
During the strike of the employees, Selikor's interim management announced that the vision is to replace three garbage trucks per year and to purchase three new ones. “All this is only possible if the government fulfills its agreements by paying the waste processing company,” according to the management.
According to Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) Dorothy Pietersz-Janga, together with Minister of Finance Javier Silvania, a solution has been found for the outstanding debt of the government at Selikor. Five brand new garbage trucks have also arrived.
