None of the 29 Defense buildings in Curaçao and Aruba meet the fire safety requirements

Local | By Correspondent April 29, 2019

THE HAGUE - Of all 29 buildings that the Ministry of Defense uses in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, none meets fire safety standards.

This is evident from an inventory of the state of maintenance of all the properties of the Ministry of Defense. By 31 December 2018, all buildings should have been adapted to the new fire safety requirements. For 90 of which 29 in the Caribbean, that deadline was not met.

“The risks are limited to an acceptable level due to the presence of a fire alarm system with full detection and the appointment of additional company emergency services, also outside office hours. This means that evacuation can be quickly evacuated in the event of a fire and that flight safety is increased,” says Undersecretary of Defense Barbara Visser in the Dutch parliament.

The minister blames the problems on the cuts under previous cabinets. “There is too much overdue maintenance to quickly resolve all bottlenecks,” says Visser. The Central Government Real Estate Agency directs the order of the buildings. Those on Curaçao and Aruba are the last ones - end of 2021 -.
