Number of welfare recipients estimated too high

Local | By Correspondent September 6, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - More than 8,000 people in Curaçao receive social assistance benefits. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas previously spoke about 15,000 people during a press conference.

The number of people who receive welfare has increased compared to the start of the corona crisis in 2020. In reality, it concerns 8,041 people. More than 7,000 of these also receive a resilience benefit. Those figures were announced on Thursday by Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia of Social Development, Labor and Welfare.

This, therefore, concerns about half the number of people that Pisas mentioned during an inserted press conference on Friday. Tensions and the time pressure under which decisions had to be made regarding the COHO Kingdom Act may have played a role in the Kingdom Council of Ministers.
