WILLEMSTAD - Jaanchies, the oldest restaurant on the island, located on Westpunt, is in danger of having to close its doors. Revenues have been declining for years and the two lockdowns have now turned out to be the final blow.
The family business Jaanchies has been a household name in Curaçao for 85 years and is known to a large and international audience. But the restaurant is now on the verge of bankruptcy.
Due to the shrinking economy and the covid crisis, but also somewhat due to wrong decisions, revenues have been declining for years and the two lockdowns have been the final blow.
“The only way I will survive this is if I get help,” says Jaanchi. This help must come from private individuals, because he is not entitled to the NOW scheme for business owners, nor to the Allowance for fixed costs. A few sympathizers have suggested the idea of starting up crowdfunding, according to a local resident of Jaanchies. But little else is known about this.
