One-third of primary school students are bullied

Local | By Correspondent July 7, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - More than one-third of children in primary education in Curaçao are bullied. This is shown by research by the University of Curaçao (UoC) and the Foundation Fair Educational Chance and the University of Groningen (RUG).

Researcher Odette van Brummen-Girigori has questioned 413 young people about bullying, both in Papiamento and in Dutch. 34.7 percent of the students indicated that they had been bullied in the past year. 35 percent say they bully themselves. This is most often based on: weight (28 percent) color (26 percent), gender (19 percent) economic class (18.6 percent) .

Boys bully more often than girls. This has a huge impact on their confidence. You often see that those who are bullied also bully others.

The Department of Education is grateful for the report indicates that there is room in the curriculum to include this topic.
