Optimism With Reservations: Curaçaoans Expect Higher Prices Despite Stable Finances

Local, | By Correspondent January 30, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçaoans remain cautiously optimistic about their personal financial situation, but widespread concern over rising prices continues to weigh on consumer confidence, according to the CBCS survey.

Most respondents report that their household finances have remained stable over the past year, and more than half expect improvement in the coming 12 months. Younger residents are notably more optimistic than older age groups, particularly regarding employment prospects.

At the same time, nearly 80 percent of households expect consumer prices to increase in the year ahead. As a result, most residents are postponing major purchases, reflecting a defensive financial mindset despite relative stability.

This mix of guarded optimism and inflation anxiety suggests that while Curaçao’s households are not in crisis, they are far from confident. For policymakers, the message is clear: economic growth alone is not enough if rising costs continue to erode purchasing power and long-term security.
