PAHO warns for dengue

Local | By Correspondent March 7, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - The Pan America Health Organization (PAHO) warns against a subsequent Dengue epidemic in the Caribbean. In 2010 and 2013, there were major epidemics in the region with more than two million reports of the virus in that last year. Dengue is transferred by, among others, the Aedes Aegypti that can be found in Curaçao. In addition, a person can get dengue several times, in contrast to Zika or Chikungunya.

Researchers also recently discovered that brain damage in Zika is worse when the mother has had dengue. The findings show that Zika virus infections in mothers with antibodies to dengue lead to less weight in the baby, a smaller head and significantly more damage to the brain tissue.
