PAR faction aims to stabilize public housing prices by abolishing indexation

Local | By Press release October 20, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - In a bid to maintain affordable public housing, the PAR faction in Parliament has recently proposed a bill aimed at eliminating indexation. With this legal adjustment, the PAR faction aims to guarantee that any government decision concerning public housing will not lead to price increases. The primary objective behind this initiative is to enable residents to purchase their homes in accordance with the law.

PAR Faction

The year 1989 saw the introduction of an annual indexation policy on public housing by the government. After more than three decades, it has become apparent that this indexation practice has significantly driven up the prices of public housing. Although the initial intent was to facilitate easier access to home ownership, it has inadvertently posed challenges for many citizens.

In response to this issue, Mr. Cooper, a prominent figure in the parliamentary faction, has indicated that they are actively working on a proposal to streamline the sale of public housing and increase the discounts offered. The legal amendments proposed by the PAR faction provide a framework for these changes. Irrespective of the government's eventual decisions, this legislation will serve as a safeguard against future price hikes in public housing.

The four members of the PAR parliamentary faction collectively believe that it is imperative to establish a sustainable solution for the sale of these public housing units, in line with the spirit of the 1962 law. This endeavor aims to empower a group of citizens to achieve their dream of becoming homeowners.

The proposed legislation will now follow the established legislative process, commencing with a review by the Council of Advice (RvA) for necessary recommendations. The PAR faction hopes that this will be prioritized and addressed expeditiously, as the changes are relatively straightforward.

The PAR faction's target is to have this bill approved in the Curaçao Parliament by the beginning of 2024. They are optimistic that their legislative proposal will garner the support of all other members of Parliament, ultimately benefitting the community at large.
