Parliament Pushes for Food Security Measures for Curaçao and Bonaire

Local | By Correspondent December 15, 2025

THE HAGUE – With supply-route disruptions now considered a realistic scenario due to mounting regional tensions, several MPs have urged the Dutch government to fast-track food-security initiatives for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The proposals aim to ensure that Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire can withstand temporary shortages if maritime routes become unsafe.

ChristenUnie’s Don Ceder introduced a motion to accelerate earlier plans to boost Bonaire’s domestic food production by at least 25 percent. He argued that the geopolitical environment makes self-reliance more important than ever, warning that disruptions could occur without notice. The government supported the motion.

A follow-up motion called for coordinated planning between The Hague and the ABC-islands to secure alternative import routes, should regional supply chains fail. MPs emphasized that Caribbean residents should never find themselves facing shortages due to circumstances beyond their control.

JA21’s Hoogeveen demanded a full assessment of existing strategic reserves in the Caribbean territories, including fuel, medical supplies and emergency materials. He insisted the government provide details on whether current reserves are sufficient in case transport links are temporarily cut off.

As tensions escalate between the United States and Venezuela, concerns grow that the islands' proximity to potential conflict zones puts them in a precarious position. MPs across parties acknowledged that the islands need robust contingency planning, not just diplomatic assurances.

With government support for most motions, the initiatives are expected to move forward following next week’s parliamentary vote.
