WILLEMSTAD – The Speaker of the Staten van Curaçao, Fergino Brownbill, has proposed reallocating 250,000 guilders within the draft 2026 national budget to increase funding for the parliament itself. The proposal is contained in an amendment to the draft budget.
Specifically, Brownbill proposes reducing the allocation for unforeseen expenditures by 250,000 guilders. Within the parliamentary budget chapter, spending on representation and public information would be increased by 150,000 guilders, while advisory costs would rise by 100,000 guilders.
In the explanatory notes to the amendment, the Speaker states that the additional funding for representation and public information is partly needed for the organization of conferences and the reception of regional delegations. Reference is also made to a planned international meeting in May 2026 involving representatives of parliaments from across the Caribbean region.
The amendment further mentions the intended establishment of a temporary Parlantiño committee that will focus on specific Caribbean affairs. According to Brownbill, these activities require additional financial resources.
The proposed increase in advisory costs is linked to the temporary relocation of the parliament building and the preparations for the construction of a permanent new facility. External advisory support is considered necessary for these processes, according to the justification provided with the amendment.
