Parliament wants to eliminate 12.5% salary cut

Local | By Correspondent June 20, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Parliament wants the 12.5 percent reduction on civil servants' salaries eliminated as soon as possible. A motion to that effect calls on the government to get this done as soon as possible. The reduction was a condition of the Netherlands in exchange for liquidity support.

Parliament met on Friday about the measure that they consider to be unjustified and irresponsible with increased costs. Worldwide costs are rising due to the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas joined the Members of Parliament with their motion.

In addition, according to Finance Minister Javier Silvania, the government would have sufficient financial resources to pay a holiday allowance of three percent.

The 25 percent cut for Members of Parliament will apply until 2023. After an evaluation, it will be discussed whether this measure, which also falls under the Dutch conditions, will be extended.

Pisas participated in the Four Countries Consultation in Aruba last weekend. The Caribbean Reform and Development Agency (COHO) was also discussed during the meetings.
