Parliament Warns of Migration Pressure if Venezuela Crisis Escalates

Local | By Correspondent December 15, 2025

THE HAGUE – Members of the Dutch Parliament have warned that a further escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela could trigger new migration flows toward the Caribbean, placing pressure on Curaçao and neighboring islands.

During the debate, several MPs referenced past migration waves from Venezuela, noting that Curaçao has already borne a disproportionate humanitarian and logistical burden. Lawmakers stressed that any renewed influx would test the island’s housing capacity, healthcare system and border control resources.

Minister van Weel confirmed that scenario planning is underway and that Dutch authorities are in regular contact with island governments. He emphasized that, at present, there are no indications of an imminent mass migration, but acknowledged that contingency plans must remain active.

MPs urged the government to ensure that Curaçao is not left to manage potential humanitarian challenges alone. They called for clear protocols outlining how the Kingdom would respond collectively if migration pressures increase.

The issue remains sensitive on the island, where residents continue to express concern about social cohesion, public services and long-term sustainability.
