Payment of salaries for Isla employees uncertain

Local | By Correspondent September 19, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - The payment of salaries of Isla employees remains uncertain. Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath emphasizes this.

He recently asked the US Office of Foreign Assets Control to exempt Curacao from the sanctions imposed by the US against Venezuela. These sanctions also apply to countries that do business with Venezuela, as Curacao does by refining PDVSA oil. The sale of oil products is also difficult due to the sanctions.

Earlier the Americans agreed to such a proposal, but Rhuggenaath says he cannot guarantee that they will do this again. Especially since the relationship between the US and Venezuela is subject to change every day. Moreover, even if the US agrees, the refinery problems continue to rise and Rhuggenaath cannot guarantee that salaries can be paid properly.
