WILLEMSTAD - Curacao Clean-Up will hand over a petition to both the government and the parliament of Curacao today. That happened a little after 9 this morning. The petition asks for better environmental measures. More than 5,700 people signed up to support the request. Curacao Clean Up asks, among other things, for a ban on the use of "single-use plastic" as of 1 January next year. Costs to dump garbage at the landfill should also be considerably reduced.

The annual Curacao Clean-Up was organized more than three weeks ago. More than 1,300 volunteers have collected about 200,000 kilos of waste at more than 80 locations. In recent weeks, signatures have been collected for the petition. It has five spearheads: drastic reduction of landfill costs, a ban on single-use plastic, a major long-term information and advertising campaign, more waste bins on the street, and more means for control.
