WILLEMSTAD - The Fundashon Akshon Awor has started a petition this weekend to allow Curaçao to become a fully-fledged municipality of the Netherlands.
Board member Svetlana "Dana" Bernardo hopes to be able to make a binding referendum possible by means of a digital signature campaign. Bernardo says that Curaçao can greatly benefit from Dutch funds for education, social security, and other support.
She also does not believe that this compromises the right to self-determination.
Bernardo says that there are many people who do not want the people to "wake up", for example by using slogans about slavery and colonialism.
Fundashon Akshon Awor is also known for the publicity campaign "Habri Wowo" (Open your Eyes). This action was intended to give people more confidence in achieving equality within the Kingdom and to leave feelings of inferiority behind.
The petition can be found here.
