WILLEMSTAD – Member of Parliament Sheldry Osepa of the Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) has asked the Curaçao government to formally honor Churandy Martina for his participation in the Dutch television program Expeditie Robinson.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Osepa argues that Martina represented Curaçao in an exceptional way and brought positive attention to the island among a large audience in the Netherlands.
According to Osepa, Martina reached the final stages of the popular survival reality show and demonstrated discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship throughout the competition. In doing so, he acted not only as a top athlete, but also as an ambassador for Curaçao, the MP stated.
Osepa pointed out that Expeditie Robinson attracts an estimated 1.6 million viewers in the Netherlands. He believes Martina’s presence on the program contributed to a favorable image of Curaçao and increased the island’s visibility abroad.
In his letter, Osepa asked whether the government considers Martina’s performance to be a unique achievement and whether it warrants an official form of recognition or appreciation. He also inquired whether the cabinet views the international exposure generated by Martina’s participation as a meaningful contribution to the promotion of Curaçao in both sporting and social terms.
