THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - According to the Dutch Undersecretary for Ankie Broekers-Knol for Justice and Security, poverty is not a reason to receive asylum from the Dutch Kingdom. This is stated in the asylum policy for Venezuelans. For this reason, it has been established that asylum applications from Venezuelans must be handled individually.
According to Broekers-Knol, there is a specific group that is at risk in the country. She mentions, for example, members of the opposition, soldiers, or journalists who, according to various human rights organizations, have been tortured or threatened.
In Curacao, more or less the same policy applies to Venezuelans: each application must be handled individually. According to United Nations High Commissioner for Human rights (UNHCR), Curaçao does not adhere to this and does not handle these cases appropriately.
